There's more information about submissions over on http://astudyinbakerstreet.org/

To answer a frequently asked question:

Yes, you can submit more than one story at a time. We'll likely only publish one story by an author in an issue and save the other for a future issue.

An exception might be made if someone submits art, a story, a non-fiction piece, and a poem. In that case, the writer/artist might have multiple appearances in a single issue.

Also -- We're also taking submissions with a Christmas/Winter theme. If you've got a story/art/poem/article that relates to Sherlock Holmes and Christmas/Winter, start sending those in now.

Holmesian 'verse:

Contact Email:
  • All submissions must be Word Document (.doc) files in a black, sans-serif font (e.g. Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, Trebuchet MS, et al).
  • No indentation of paragraphs.  One extra break between paragraphs.
  • Either single or double quotes to indicate dialogue. (ie: "Holmes!" I shouted. / 'Holmes!' I shouted. / John said, "Mycroft's exact words were 'I'll just tell Mummy, shall I?'."  / John said, 'Mycroft's exact words were "I'll just tell Mummy, shall I?".' )   Just as long as it's consistent within the story.
  •  Italics to indicate thoughts and emphasis. (What on Earth is he wearing? Thought Sherlock as he eyed John's hat. It appeared to have bright red earflaps. And a puffy thing on top. And half of it was orange.)
  • Use of bold should be kept to a minimum in stories.
  • Underlines shouldn't be used at all, lest people think they're links.
  • The smut in the NSFW edition will be explicit but not too hardcore. Anything triggering, such as dubious consent/noncon, will be decided on a case-by-case basis. The same goes for M-preg and excessive OOC-ness. There will be a trigger warning in place for each questionable work.
  •  If you are going to include images in your written submission, you must format this yourself OR find someone else to do so before submission.
Rating?
We have Not Safe For Work and Safe For Work editions, so there is not rating restriction.
  • Word Count Restriction

  • At this stage, we will only accept ONE 5000 word submission per zine. First come, first served.
  • Any submission over 3,500  will be treated as 'episodic' and will be split between issues. Your submissions must reflect this to be considered. There will be 200 word grace per written work submitted.
  • Please try to keep each submission per zine under 3,500 words. If it includes images, please keep under 3000.
Fiction/Non Fiction - Submissions we will NOT accept
  • No plagiarism.
  • No Pedophilia, Coprophilia, Bestiality, Necrophilia, or Vore

The votes are in! We've finally got a name.

Drumroll...

"A STUDY IN BAKER STREET"

This name is general to all incarnations of Holmesness. It voted best on the forum and even though "The Game is On" voted well, it's a bit too BBC's Sherlock specific. It gets the point across that we're a Holmes publication and it's also pretty catchy. Hopefully we can get the ball rolling a bit faster now that we have something to identify ourselves with.

Hey all, I'm back from the other side of the world.... well I have been for nearly 1 week now, but combine jet lag with a messy room and crap buckets of stuff to sort through as well as having broken internet that hated LJ, I'm only just back on my feet now... just

So, how are people liking the layout of the comm so far?
Granted there will be a header soon, but before I start designing the header I need to decide on the rest of the layout before hand.

Also speaking of headers, my idea so far is to combine images from the Granada series, the 09 movie, BBC Sherlock as well as illustrations from the original publications.
Does this sound good with everyone??
Any other incarnation I should include or leave out?

Now that my internet has decided to stop being pants on head retarded, I can actually go looking for images to use now, so the header should be up hopefully within a week or two.

The Graphics Monkey.

P.S We have a mood theme, everyone use it :D
Sadly it's BBC Sherlock only, until I find a more mixed up one

I have no idea why the forum is down. The host is reporting no problems. My other website is up and running. But I can't get to the forum at all -- not even through the control panel.

I'm working on it.

The nameservers changed and I had to give the new information to the domain registrar. It should be back up and working anywhere between now and Saturday, depending on how long it takes the change to propagate throughout the internetland. WE HAVE LIFTOFF!

They swear they emailed me about this, but I went back through all my hosting stuff and couldn't find it.

When we decide on a name for the zine I'll register the domain THROUGH the host and not through a third-party so we won't have this problem later.

A few points to consolidate the direction of the zine.

Starting with Web only

If at any stage we want to go to printed, we'll already have previous zines and can go back and send them out. Printing will be On demand. I will compile a list of ways we can do this as per people's suggestions :)

NSFW vs. SFW
We can easily make the whole zine, and then removed the NSFW sections for a second upload. The submissions themselves will all have a summary in the contents page, E.G rating, kinks, gen, slash, etc.

Zine regularity
As per the poll, most people felt comfortable with a 3 monthly zine. Making a decision here that this will be our target initially, as we don't want to put pressure on people else the submissions won't be their best due to stress and it gives time to proof read. Monthly deadlines at first may be too daunting. If at a later date we all feel like this needs to change, that's fine! 6 monthly would be fine if it was physical only, but as its going online, it makes things easier.

Which Canon? AKA Is it only BBC Sherlock?

Anything goes.

This is an important point! Making it strictly one canon would make it simpler for people to contribute as everyone is working with the same canon etc in mind, BUT we don't want to exclude anyone who loves Sherlock Holmes no matter what canon, TV, books, whatever it is they like.

The aim of the zine is to promote the love of anything 'Holmesian'.

My hope for the zine to promote an interest in all of the canons, not a specific film or book etc. The more variety, the better. You could write an essay about Jeremy Brett, make a crossword about Victorian criminals, draw some art of RDJ!Holmes poisoning Gladstone, write a fic about Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century, seriously, anything goes.

The zine will include any incarnation of Sherlock Holmes people want to include. We may do a specific canon as a theme at some stage E.G BBC Sherlock only, Granada only etc, but for now you can write/draw about any canon you like. So long as it is Sherlock Holmes, go for it!

Slash? Where?!
As above, anything goes. The zine is not Holmes/Watson slash only. It is open to any and all pairings. Your contribution does not have to involve relationships at all (E.G An essay on English Bulldogs, some art of Holmes playing violin)

A lot of the people on LJ fandom comms enjoy a good serving of slash. The last thing I want people to think is 'Oh no, every contribution I submit is just slash, I better write something else this time!'. Submit what you want!

As with any publication - if someone doesn't like the conent, they can simply turn the page and move on. There will be articles people don't want to read, pairings people dont ship, art people don't like. The zine will promote freedom of speech and choice and all that malarky.

We may have a few Holmes/Watson-centric zines, or perhaps collect all of the fic/art from previous zines and compile one :) OR Just as with the NSFW vs. SFW, seperate them if there is a large enough margin.

Please feel free to discuss anything I've posted here. Your opinions are needed!

Hello kittens.

First of all, big thanks to theninth , who has kept the comm kicking in my absence.

A call to our crew

As with this week, there will be times I will not be available, but will always try and let you know for how long etc. I do need to have some kind of contact from those who are still interested in running the comm E.G, posting entries to alert contributers what is needed next, handling new members etc. It may be important to allocate one or two duties to each of us so that not everyone is doing one thing. Please PM or comment here <3

ALSO if you have put your hand up for a role, can you please post a comment here as to whether you are still interested in taking charge of it so I can organise a list of who needs to talk to who. Thanks :)

Layout
The layout looks to be in limbo right now, but I have every faith in creadigol_lili  as I've seen her whip up amazing layouts in a matter of hours. She left the UK for Australia this week, but will get back on it when she can :)

Voting
So that the choices about what happens with the zine are as fair as possible, I will try and make polls. Of course if you comment with a smashing suggestion, this will always be taken into consideration.

Forum - Why do we need a forum? That's confusing! Livejournal is fine for conversating, right?

The forum is STAFF ONLY.  It will be used for staff to have 'meetings' and nut things out behind the scenes as opposed to big long comment chains on the LJ. It will also be used for storing files as LJ has limited capacity for that.

If you are on the staff and have not registered, please do so: http://theninth.net/forum :) Thank you!

Please comment if you wish to add anything!

Hello zineroonies,

First of all, thanks to creadigol_lili for sprucing this place up. She's taken into account the comments and suggestions everyone made.

There is a lot of creativity flying around on the posts, some excellent ideas indeed. I'm so excited by some of the concepts you've come up with. I'm going to do another roundup post to solidify ideas, get some more polls up and help us define what we all want this project to be :)

For now, we want to pin down a date to aim for to have our first Zine put together. It's not going to be perfect and it may differ by a week or so, but that will help people to work out their schedules for what needs to be done to get it finalised and work it around their own busy lives!

The most popular vote for how regular we should release a Zine was 3 monthly, so essentially it will be seasonal, and then we may do some mini zines for Christmas, Halloween, Holmes Anniversaries, etc...

So, should we aim to get one out in September, October (this coincides with sherlockfest for those involved with that) November, or do a Christmas Zine as our first. I'd like to see one out before an xmas one, but it's all dependent on timing for you all.

What do you guys think? :)
